4WD Mechanic Frequently Asked Questions
Whatâs the difference between a logbook service and a regular service?
How Often Should I Have My 4WD Serviced?
Every 4WD is different, but a good rule of thumb is every 10,000 kms or 6 months – whichever comes first. However, if youâre going offroad, towing, or returning from a particularly dusty trip or are just generally working your car harder than normal, you should decrease the time between services. The service manual should provide a servicing schedule and a list of what is required for each service. To learn more, read or blog âHow Often Should You Service Your Car?â.
How Often Should I Replace My 4WD Tyres?
One of the best ways to know itâs time for new 4WD tyres is when the tyre tread has worn down to the wear indicators (this lets you know there is about 2 mm of tread remaining. 1.5mm is the legal tread depth in QLD, so any lower than that and you are at risk of receiving a fine – not to mention that low tread is extremely dangerous, especially in the wet. If your tyres are chipped, cracked or have sustained any serious damage, then they will also need to be replaced. Your tyres should be regularly inspected to ensure they are good condition.
When 4WDing, you should always be prepared to replace your tyres before a big trip. Not having enough tread or blowing out a tyre off road can be a truly frustrating or even life threatening experience.
Our blog âWhen Should I Replace My Tyresâ has more information. Check out our top tyre care and maintenance tips to get the most life out of your tyre.
How Often should I replace my 4WD brakes/rotors?
Your mechanic will check your 4WD brake pads and rotors each time they service your vehicle and let you know if they are close to or need replacing. Because each vehicle is different and it also depends on how hard you drive your 4WD, there is no rule of thumb for brake & pad replacements other than to regularly visually inspect them. However, if you hear squeaking or grinding noises coming from your brakes, it means your 4WD brake components need attention and should be inspected by a qualified mechanic.
Do You Provide pickup & drop off services?
Yes we do! Please give us a call on 07 3356 1538 to easily arrange pickup & drop off times for your car service.
How do I know if my 4WD battery needs to be replaced?
A dead battery usually has some pretty specific symptoms including:
- A slow engine crank
- Your battery wonât charge
- A bloated battery
- A rotten egg smell
Ensuring your 4WD battery is in good working is incredibly important, especially if you plan on being out of range of help. If you have any of these symptoms, contact us to book in a battery replacement for your 4WD today.
